Articling timeline and general questions

Hey everyone,

I'm hoping to get some feedback from fellow 3Ls currently in search of articles, as well as any other articling students/lawyers who have been through the process before. It's mid February and I'm sitting here with no articling position. I know it isn't time to panic yet, but I wanted to open up a discussion for anyone in the same boat about their plans/thoughts/feelings about the recruit this year.

I've got a few questions to start it off:

1) How is everybody's cold emailing/cold calling going? Anyone getting responses? I've sent out apps to every posting through my school's CSO, but no interviews yet. I've got a 79 average, 3 As last semester, good ECs/work experience prior to law school, had a handful of Bay Street OCIs/in firms last year -  I know I've got at least a decent application. Anyone else in the same boat?

2) Any advice/insight about what to expect in terms of opportunities coming down the pipeline via CSO? In past years, do many firms still submit job postings for articles this late in the game/into the summer? Or is it mostly networking and knocking doors beyond this point?

3) Lastly, I know that I need to take this upon myself and start networking, cold emailing/calling, and digging something up myself. Assuming I still can't get anything in the summer - what are your thoughts on Ryerson's LPP?

Thanks for this. Always nice to know others are in the disheartening position of not having articling yet.

1) For cold calling/emailing I've been using my network to make connections. So far I haven't found too many jobs on this front (because they are areas of law I have no interest in practicing/no experience or the pay is just way, way too low). I have okay grades. I don't know what my percentage is, but I've got a 3.4 with a couple course prizes. 

2) I have no idea of the quality of the positions but my school's career office has told me to keep my head up and that there will be a continuous stream of positions open. Looking at last year's post-articling thread, it looks like jobs continue to be posted for the next few months. So, there's a reason to keep one's head up. I will say that my career office doesn't tend to be overly rosy so I put stock in what they say. 

3) I have no desire to do the LPP. I don't want to pay money to make myself unmarketable. Law is a stratified profession and I've been warned by my friends who already practice to be very careful with this route.

At this point, I'll continue to apply to jobs as they come but I have no problem reapplying for the articling recruit.

Hi - I just received an articling position from a pure cold email, the firm had never hired an articling student before and they had no posting for a student. I was lucky that the prof I'm RA-ing for now knows the firm/lawyers so I name-dropped. Don't give up on cold emails!! I got 3 interviews from cold emails and one offer from it. I've been cold emailing since November or October. Set a goal and cold email every day. Ask profs for recommendations on firms who work in the field you're interested in, some firms do great work but don't have a great online presence or are hard to find. 

Re LPP: I've heard bad things and good things. A colleague of mine did the LPP and got hired back at the same government organization that she did the LPP placement with. On the other hand, a mentor of mine on bay st said in his view, the LPP just doesn't prepare you like articling does. 

In terms of future postings: I've heard from many articling students and new calls that basically everyone ends up finding a position (supposedly). Lots of really great students don't get a position until the end of the summer and still get to start on the same route as the people who got positions during recruit or before the summer. Keep hope!

I'm in a bit of a different situation as in international graduate (I'm not Canadian) but I can sympathise with the pains of cold emailing. I have sent many emails with only a few responses which hasn't led anywhere yet. But I keep trying and reworking my resume/cover letter. I figure all I need is one person to give me a chance! 

Keep it up and hopefully we can find something soon!

    • I don't think they weigh your cGPA too heavily. My cGPA is pretty tragic but I have a strong L2 and a sub-par LSAT and was waitlisted last cycle. I know that's not an acceptance but I really do think they prioritize your L2, and favour a strong upward trend. (I have friends who were accepted over previous cycles with lower cGPA's but strong L2's as well). 
    • I was accepted by Western this cycle with with a 3.08 cGPA and a 3.65 L2 (and a 167 LSAT). Mind you, I also have 2 masters degrees and got an A- average in both (both were course-based). I think cGPA does matter, but they account for how long ago your undergrad was and what you've done since then, and whether you've proved that you could probably do better if you were given another chance (and ergo succeed in law school). 
    • Hi, are there any LLM applicants for the year 2021/2022 who received an admission e mail from Dalhousie? My application was completed on 31st March 2021 and waiting for a reply from the University. Just wondering whether any one of you guys have an update.    Thank you!!!
    • There are a lot of municipalities in Canada. City of Toronto hires a few articling students (most of their lawyers are former articling students and they rarely hire from outside though), along with Region of Peel, York Region, and some others I've seen. For federal government, there is only really the DOJ Legal Excellence Program. The municipalities also hire junior lawyers and I've seen quite a few postings in York Region and the surrounding areas. The process is a lot faster than the federal government which can take over a year from the time you apply. The federal government rarely hires junior lawyers outside of its articling students and federal court clerks. And you often see mid-level lawyers applying for LP-01 positions with the federal government and going through a written exam and interview processes just to end up in a waiting pool. I know people who applied in 2019 for the most recent DOJ LP-01 recruitment process and were put into a waiting pool which is scheduled to expire soon, after which point you have to apply all over again. So getting your foot in the door is a lot harder than it is for municipal and provincial. Certainly, getting into provincial is easier than municipal as there are a lot more legal positions available as well. 
    • Hey I'm a bit late here but I can give you my personal experience. It is quit the contrary of what your expectations seem to be. I did 3 years CEGEP and a 4 year Undergrad (just because I took my time). I spent some time managing a restaurant, then started a law certificate in the evening, then law school. I thought I would be disadvantaged because my background was so far away form the classic path to Biglaw. I will be 28 when graduating. I just did my Course aux stages and got 4 offers, while having a 3.65 GPA. First, they don't care about your age. If you have done anything productive in the past 10 years, it will be a great advantage to you in the interviews, because you might have more to say than anyone else. Find a way to highlight your maturity/leadership or whatever it is you have developed while others were in high school. I had a lot of misconceptions about a supposed prejudice towards older candidates, but I can assure you they don't really care. Get involved in whatever gets you going and be passionate about something. Good luck!
