Advice for a Summer Student at Crown's Attorney Office

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hi everyone,

I'm about to start my 2L summer job at a Crown's office in Ontario and I was hoping to get some advice especially from people who summered with Crown offices.

Specifically what to expect in terms of the workload, what are the most common types of tasks I will be required to do, am I going to be helping to a specific assistant attorney or the whole office, and most importantly as I am a new immigrant with an LLB outside of Canada, I was hoping to hear what is the level of competence and knowledge that is expected from me to have as a 2L student? I ask this because though I have passed my NCA exam on Criminal Law, I have read notes and books and I feel that I do understand the substantive law, I still don't feel completely confident in myself and that I actually know procedure or able to draft and file court documents. I know it's suppose to be somewhat similar to the articling job with them but not as demanding.

Also, I'd like to hear about any online resources where I can read a bit more about criminal procedure, evidence rules etc (aside from court cases) as the library is not available now (and often their law books selection is not great anyways).

I appreciate any advice, thanks.

My best advice is to take every opportunity to sit and watch in court. Honestly some of the best education I got was from sitting in a busy bail court or watching senior counsel handle a case start to finish.

This will give you a perspective on why you are doing the various tasks you are assigned, and how they translate into the Court record. Invaluable perspective.

Thanks for the advice! I am definitely going to dedicate time for that once the courts are open.

The bar is low; they don't expect students to know much.

Also, with the COVID situation, your day-to-day is going to look very different than the usual Crown summering experience (the downside is that you aren't going to get the court experience to improve upon those gaps in knowledge you mentioned).

Thanks, I am hoping that the courts will open in July as planned and at least I'll get a month or so of court experience.

    • Maybe in the future things will change, but at the moment no law is applicable to this currency, and any other cryptocurrency in general. Law is a great specialty overall, so it's a great choice, but its connection with cryptocurrencies is questionable. On the other hand, the blockchain technology is going to expand in the future, so maybe a specialty related to security or online transactions can be useful. I think trading, in general, it's a remunerative activity because I've been performing eos canada transactions for a while, and it's a real source of income. As for me, it's your choice, but its lucrativeness in the future is doubtable.
    • I would think they would just reject/accept or waitlist people at this point. I understand that they are holistic, but this is a bit ridiculous. I almost want to move on with life and be pleasantly surprised if they accept me, but I’m really running out of distractions thanks to all of this free time.
