After reviewing the apps our firm received, can I offer a bit of advice. Please do even a modicum of research on the employers prior to sending them an app. It is amazing to me that so many law students do not do this, and it is painfully obvious in the cover letters they write.  If you don't know what type of law we practice, and you mention how passionate you are about a totally different area of the law, why are you sending us an app?  Why waste your time and ours?

I just saw this now.

I once applied to a firm.  I mentioned an interest in a particular area of law that was mentioned on the firm's website as being a practice area.

I got an interview with the firm, but they asked me if I had done any research into the firm, because I listed an interest in an area they didn't practice in.

The area of law that one particular applicant mentioned was his/her passion was not an area of the law that you would ever find on our website. Ever. It would have been clear to him/her if even a quick look at out website had been done. Needless to say, that individual is not getting an interview.

THIS. I've been to firms where I've mentioned an area of practice that was listed on their website and they look at me like I havent done research on their firms expertise... like...do YOU know how you advertise yourself?

Just out of curiosity, did anyone apply to RBC?

I was wondering if they sent the assessment thing to everyone.  They worded the emails in a way that made it seem like you were actually selected for something and moved forward in the process, but I have my doubts.

I applied and have gotten nothing so I am going to assume you are correct.

The main reason I asked was because the timing of it was weird.  I applied on a Sunday night and within 30 minutes I got an email congratulating me and saying I'll receive an email to do an assessment later, which made me think it was an automated response they send to everyone.  But maybe it was a good thing.

Anyway, thanks for the response.  The posting closed not long ago, so I'm sure they're still sending them out.  Good luck.

Osgoode's CDO didn't even bother posting it on the school's job board. Sometimes I wonder how they justify charging the second highest law school tuition in the country with such incompetence

To those who have already begun interviewing with Minden Gross today did they tell you guys about dinner at the end of the interview? Or did you find out after? (Or have you not heard yet)

I was hoping for some advice regarding whether doing some law-related but unpaid work for your 2L summer at an NGO would put you at a disadvantage for articling recruit. I'm currently stumped on whether to take an unpaid job or to keep searching in the hopes that I find something that pays and that could lead to an eventual articling position. I'm also currently in a lot of debt and I'm not sure if it would be smart to do something unpaid and go even deeper into debt for the experience, as much as I do want experience. Any advice would be appreciated!

    • I worked full-time at a fast food restaurant for two years prior to attending law school. I did not drink any alcohol, I used the local Tim Hortons WiFi and I relied on my city's food bank. I managed to save enough to pay for 2/3 of my law school tuition. I relied on OSAP and bursaries for the rest.
    • Hello, I was recently admitted to Osgoode and am looking to start applying for an apartment in Assiniboine or the Osgoode Chambers as soon as possible given the limited number of 1 bedroom apartment units. I firmly accepted the offer two days ago as Osgoode is my dream law school (I seriously feel so fortunate even now), and my offer response status on OASIS was updated to "accepted" I am assuming to indicate Osgoode has processed my firm acceptance on OLSAS. Now, in my e-mail offer package sent to me by Vicky, the admissions coordinator, was a student number; this student number was the same one as my current York university student number as I am finishing up my undergraduate at York at this point in time. When I follow the housing application through for newly admitted applicants I see on the York "MyFile" page my admittance into Osgoode has been confirmed, though I cannot select the "York University Apartment Lease Term" option in the the housing application portal that extends from the "MyFile" page; as in, the option isn't there at all. I haven't received the official offer letter in the mail yet, will that contain a different student number for me to use than the one currently in my online offer package sent to me by the admissions coordinator? Or, is this simply a file processing matter and the option will be available to me at a later date? I see on my OASIS page a message at the bottom that says "stay tuned for further information about your new passport York account and Osgoode student email"- I also considered my issue is related to that. Thank you in advance anyone who replies and can provide clarifying information about this process
    • Does anybody know what the fb group is called?
    • Can someone recommend some good neighbourhoods and apartment complexes to look into? Do most law students live alone or in groups? I’d figure grad students wouldn’t live in a house with undergrad frat boys lol   Also, if anyone is looking for a clean, serious and respectful housemate next year, my DMs are open 😝
    • hi got no dog in this fight or anything but the subject matter caught my attention, so this is just an FYI sorta: i'm coming from a software background and your reluctance to treat this as being an understandable, human error because the root cause might be a software bug is kind of suspect logic (imo, sorry!) despite those debugging courses, and despite even rigorous bug testing in the development process (fantastical case, very seldom the reality in my experience working in a variety of orgs. and domains), it is an inevitability that bugs slip through the cracks, and the more obscure they are the easier they slip, and sometimes they are found in a closed-source library that you've imported, etc. so really, as far as the end-user goes, he or she may have done some innocent thing and triggered a very obscure bug resulting in the erroneous email (okay sure, kind of a convenient scenario but still very possible) best of luck and i hope it gets resolved in your favour! imma peace out nowwwwwww 😬 edit: don't get me wrong, i'd be so upset if i got this email lol... but i mean antagonizing the institution you're trying to join seems like a bad way to go either way
