Uni of Melbourne JD vs Canada

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hey guys, so I was recently accepted to the University of Melbourne in Australia's JD program. It's ranked #10 law school in the world and known to be a great school. I am still waiting to hear back from Canadian schools but I'd like to hear some opinions on if going to UofM is a good idea. I am a Canadian undergrad student but don't have specific plans on practicing law in Canada in the future- I am open to practicing wherever. Would love to hear thoughts on if you think going to a top10 school abroad is worth it or staying in Canada and potentially going to a smaller school? Curious for opinions in terms of job prospects after graduation/networking opportunities etc. Thanks!

OK, that makes more sense....For most people, studying law overseas is an expensive and risky proposition that I would discourage. But if you have ties to Australia and can imagine building a life there,  Melbourne could be a viable option.

Rankings are bullshit but it is an excellent school.  However, don't go there unless you want to work in Australia.  Melbourne's good reputation isn't well known in the way that Harvard, Oxford, etc. is.

Also be sure to research whether or not you are eligible to work in Australia. I have heard from a few Bond grads that it is almost impossible to be able to stay there and work.

If you want to work in Australia, it's prob. a good choice. If you want to work in Canada, it is not a good choice, assuming Canadian law schools are on the table .
