Sherbrooke Droit 2018: initiation activity?

Recommended Posts

I'm a student going in to Law and just found out there is a 3 day initiation activity. It seems fun, but I'm not that much of a party person. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy to go out and partying, but I just saw the schedule (bar, dance, etc.) and I don't know if I'll really enjoy it. Are the initiations really worth going? I don't know anyone in my program, but I'm hoping I could be friends with them during my first day of class and later on instead. Will I feel out at place for not going to the initiation? Also, my cousin is getting married that weekend so I'll have to choose between the two events. If the initiation thing is a really must-go, then I guess I'll go. How many people actually go to the initiation? It's an honest question, I don't mean to be a party pooper, please don't be rude. Thank you!

Please let me know,

Honestly based on everything you said you shouldn’t go to the initiations. Missing a relative wedding just for that, imo, doesn’t make sense, especially if you’re not the party type.

Yes, you might create some friendships a bit before class. But you’re going to see these people all day, everyday. Don’t worry. You’ll make friends in no time!

Initiations are an easy way to meet a lot of your future class mates and makes your first day at school that much easier/less stressful. That being said, if you're naturally a somewhat social person, or if you're going to put in the effort to socialize (or go to later events), it is far from mandatory. I myself would recommend attending initiations to everyone, but again, not required. If you have other obligations and/or don't believe you'll enjoy yourself, you'll be fine with not going. Just expect the first few days to be a little more "difficult", as others may have already met and be bonding on "war stories" from those three days.

    • Mind sharing in PM? I got invited to in firm on Monday and breakfast on Tuesday. Would like to know what I’m getting myself into lol
    • That's a shame. I get more for every hour billed.
    • I was just going to ask this. I have heard that, in some cases, it really can be worth it.

However, at times, I doubt whether my hours will really contribute to the size of my bonus. Does it really matter whether I'm 200 hours over or 300 hours over? If all of my colleagues hit the target plus some hours won't we all just get about the same amount? We don't talk about it here (obviously super faux pas to ask fellow associates what their bonus was) and a part of me believes that the difference in bonus between an associate with 50 hours over and an associate with 300 hours over is marginal.
