I think it is probably a combination of:

1) There is a ton of money in Calgary, thus there is a high volume of local qualified students that can afford it. So the old charge what you think you can get.

2) Although UofC does not have a long history/reputation, it does have local access to a lucrative big law market.

3) Alberta is very conservative politically, direct contrast to the socialist politics in BC. As a result, there tends to be an attitude of looking at students as profit targets in Alberta, whereas in BC there seems to be more of a spirit of subsidizing students. When I was in Vancouver last summer I noticed that seemingly everything was offered at a discount for students, very little of that in Calgary.

Tuition at the U of C has only just made a few sharp jump upwards in the last year or so, or at least that is my understanding. My understanding is also that a sizable number of the class comes from outside of the province. I believe that cuts against your argument.

Obviously this is true of all law schools. And I had no central thesis to my argument, I said it was one of the factors that may contribute.

Certainly I would expect there is a larger relative demographic of locals at U of C over the BC schools. Although I could be wrong on that point as well.

Accepted by email today.

Stats:

L2 - 4.0

cGPA - unknown

LSAT - 161

Softs - Mediocre in my opinion, but a lot of student leadership, some writing accolades, work experience doing things the companies really should have hired a lawyer to do, some graduate study, and a very frank and honest PS. I was also admitted as a third-year student.

May decline, it depends on whether my wife gets into a different program.

For those wondering, the circle went green after-hours on the 15th (LOR uploaded) and I got the admission email first thing this morning, so about three days of decision making in-between.

Good luck to those still waiting.

Just because I'm a future U of C law hopeful (and I have too much time on my hands), I've averaged the stats from this board for anyone who is interested:

GPA L2 (excluding percentages and 4.33 scales): 3.74

LSAT: 163.31

Congrats! nice to see someone was accepted.

The acceptance board for UofC has been pretty stagnant the past couple weeks.

yea....its pretty nerve-wracking being a prospective uofc applicant right now

To all those who are still waiting to hear, just thought you might want to know that the U of C sent out an email yesterday saying that they are extending the deadline to accept offers to April 15th. As well, when I was on a tour there last week the student showing me around indicated that the admin was pretty backed up with changes in scheduling and things like that. So if you are waiting to hear, don't give up hope! It just seems to be taking longer this year. Good luck!

The deadline extension won't speed things up!!!

My offer letter said I had until March 31 to accept, so I think it's only two weeks.

Thank you!

Congrats! Do you plan on accepting?

Thanks! I'm not sure if I am accepting yet -- I am currently leaning toward U of C, but I'm not 100% sure what my decision will be. :)

Meaning it was updated to the website minutes before you got the email, or days?
