  1. Depending on your small group section in 1L, it is definitely possible to convey interest in l/e. You can also take these courses in 2L so by the time OCIs come around you're already half way through the class and are able to discuss it more in depth during your interviews. As a general rule, I think it is important to apply broadly, but if you know you don't want to practice in this area (and are not taking any courses) it may be difficult to convey interest. There is little point in applying when you know 100% you will not go to an interview if asked. However, at the end of the day, writing an extra cover letter does not take that much time so if you do want to maximize your chances you might as well apply if there is a slight chance you may be interested in this practice area.
