      Most of the time, yes.  Some are ready to "wind down" at that age and reap the benefits of many lucrative years at the top (always amazed me that there weren't more like this, frankly).  But in my experience most are Type A, highly successful strivers, and are moved out involuntarily.  Some have developed very expensive lifestyles that require cash to be maintained (particularly where a divorce and a second family are involved).

      Sorry, but that is a ridiculous statement.  I was not involved in the recruit this year but I have been in many years previously.  Precedent tells us that 317 2L's were hired by the 16 biggest firms.  Another 20-25 mid-sized and boutique firms also participate, so we can approximate that about 400 2L's were hired.  From my experience, when overall numbers were similar, that means 75-80 U of T 2L's were hired.  Are you telling me the 80th student at U of T has better than a B- average?  If so, grade inflation is rampant there.

      I just finished 1L, and I turned 45 during the year. I would really love to be a sole-practitioner, but I just don't know what I don't know at this point. I am thinking of moving out of the city, though, where it may be more advantageous to be in that situation. Also, thinking about family law and estate law (although, my passion is animal law), so I would like to add that to the mix when possible. So, if it helps, you are certainly not alone. Our class has many matures over 40.

      Unless the recruiter reached out to you unprompted, it seems to me the ethical thing to do is apply through the recruiter. They drew your attention to an opportunity you were not otherwise aware of, which is essentially their job. The fact that you otherwise could have learned of the opportunity through your own due diligence doesn't really militate against upholding the bargain you struck with them.

      This makes complete sense, thanks for your feedback. I know I want to practice in either Ontario or Alberta which I guess makes the decision as bit more complicated after reading your response (one is in the West, the other in the East) but I appreciate this response ☺️

      @leftphalange, your situation is a bit different than being in your 60's. You have plenty of years left before retirement. Firms are not expecting much loyalty from their employees, so it is no disadvantage to you that you may retire in 10-15 years. Some pros and cons might exists for firms to hire you or a younger person, but I think they balance each other out, and that they will be outweighed by "normal" hiring considerations like your grades and your fit with that firm. When I say pros and cons, I mean: A firm where the partners/other lawyers are in their 30's might feel uncomfortable But partners in their 50's and 60's wont care so much Your life experience is a pro, especially international experience in the appropriate kind of firm But there are also stereotypes about older people such as them not being as good with technology (and you'll just have to demonstrate the contrary).
