Just wondering if anyone will be attending the Open House for prospective students in March?
I haven't accepted Ottawa yet ...but was wondering whether the open house is worthwhile.

As someone who did his undergrad at uottawa, thus knowing what the law building looks like, the building itself may straight up turn you off (though they are doing rennovations to the inside!). It's just a shame that the tour is in March, like the ugliest time on campus (winter ending so its all grey and slushy and gross everywhere, which incidentally matches the colour of half the buildings on campus [the other half are real nice though, legit]).

That said, I'm completely ignorant to the content of tour, could be useful in a positive way. Just heads up I guess, the law building does not look nice; pertinent you know given the whole thing about first impressions, could be a good warning.

Also, as an aside from the actual content of the tour, may be a good idea in itself to just go to Ottawa to see what it's like as a city, if its a good fit and all.

my two cents/proscrastination from grammar homework.

I'm planning on going.. I think it'll be nice just to meet some current students to hear what they have to say about the school, and just generally get a feel for it. That said, it's a pretty easy trip for me (distance-wise and since I have friends I can stay with)... if I was far enough away to need to fly there/book a hotel/etc, I'm not sure I would.
There's a thread about the Open House from last year that was pretty detailed as far as I can remember. If you can't make it I'm sure someone (possibly me) would tell you what it was like/etc if you asked.

Where did you read about this? Can't seem to find info on their site. I live in Ottawa so I would most likely go.

I got the brochure in my acceptance package.

I think it would be great to meet all the incoming 2012 students but I live in Toronto and find it a bit of a hassle to have to travel all the way there! I guess I'll decide closer to the date :)

It will be interesting to see what they do with Fauteux. I'm frankly a bit surprised they are even willing to do an Open House. Right now there is construction material all over the place and the boarded up stairwells don't look all that appealing. They better do something about that by March.

From the looks of it, it seems as though they're just doing some minor decor on the inside so far so that the campus has more of a common modern look and feel, sort of how they re-did Lameroux and the Lobby of the Morriset library in the summer so it has the same sort of look-ish as Demarais. Just a facelift really.

Personally, Im more excited to see Vanier get finished off, finally some more space on campus. The number of people at UO is makign that place feel suffocating.

I was accepted last cycle and deferred to fall 2012. Haven't received any invitation to this, but I'd be keen to go. Do you need to be invited? What are the details?

I got a brochure with the itinerary for the Open House in my admission package. I think there is also an rsvp date. It seems to be open to all prospective students (who have been admitted).

It's way more than a minor facelift..they're adding an entirely new classroom, adding in staircases, changing the layout of the atrium...It's been pretty major renovations that are still under way. The building has been a total mess all year. They told us it was supposed to be done in September...then it was supposed to be done in January...and now it's February and most definitely still under major construction. So it's anyone's guess if it'll be done by the open house whenever that is, but I would put money on no.

With some luck it might be done in time for you guys to enjoy it when you start in September :)

Is anyone bringing (or has anyone in the past brought) their parents to this? I'm thinking of it. Do many others?

My parents wanted to come, and I'm bringing them. I called the admin, and they said a lot of parents come to welcome day. It's not at all unusual.

I'm out of the country right now so I can't confirm, but my Mom says that the acceptance package states that the open house is on March 3rd not the 5th.... so which is it?

I think Bike Tester's advice is solid. Contact the school and ask - and they'll probably say they're more than welcome.

I did the same thing when I was admitted to U of T, and there was no issue with it there when I went to my welcome day (back in 2008). I mean, if you're a young student (early 20s), I can completely understand both them wanting to come (they want to be a part of it, and also, want to know it's a good fit), and, your wanting them there (valuing their opinion, etc.). I don't think you NEED them to go, by any stretch, but given the law school will probably spend some time pumping your tires, it's kind of nice to have them there anyway.

I went. It was really classy. They catered a really extravagant sit-down lunch and David Paccaco gave an amazing speech about what it's like to be a lawyer. I didn't really learn anything much about Ottawa U that made me any more or less likely to go, but I was very impressed with the effort they obviously put into it.

I went as well, agreed with Bike Tester, the lunch was great and Pacciaco's speech was incredible. I'm already leaning towards Ottawa and I'd say the open house pretty much sold it for me.

As cliche as it sounds, I have to say they really "made me aware of the opportunities" at UO. sort of excited for september with the human rights research centre and the work expereince for course credit opportunity thing they spoke of. Other than that, I found it was mostly just ego-inflating and a nice lunch, great way to persuade anyone. Also, two cakes. Such delicious cake.

Also, why are you people throwing around the name Pacciaco without any context like everyone knows it?

If people are going to throw a name around, it helps if they spell it correctly. ;)

uOttawa ain't that bad. But, I honestly don't understand why it would be anyone's first choice.

For me, I'm interested in international law and they have the most course offerings and profs in the field of any Canadian law school. I'm also hoping to get into the Masters part of the JD-MA program they offer with NPSIA at Carleton.
