I did not pay the unexpected bill that a lawyer sent me after I refused hiring him to represent me due to his high rate. The story started when I was looking for a planner to represent my case in the Ontario Municipal Board regarding a dispute between me and the City. The planner asked me to hire a laywer to help him representing my case but I was concerned about the cost. I asked him to give me an estimation for the total cost of hiring planner and lawyer but he refered me to the lawyer who he used to work with. One day I recieved an email from a lawyer regarding the discussion he had with planner where he encouraged me to set an appointment to discuss. Before I schedule an appointment I called the planner and asked about the cost whether I could afford or not and he again said nothing and referred me to the lawyer emphesizing that the lawyer would discuss it with me. I called the lawyer's assisstance and scheduled a meeting and at his office I partially filled up a form before visiting him. During the meeting which took about 30 to 40 minutes he mostly talked about the cost and finally he offered me his service for $8000 to $12000 when I was shocked and refused to work with him. After I hired another group (planner + lawyer) for less he sent me a bill for $339 for an hour consultation. I refused to pay and discussed with him through emails. His office forwarded my account to a collection agency. I would not pay this bill because I believe it is not fair and I would file it and go to the court because it was to discuss the cost. On the other hand I do not want to destroy my credit. The collection agency threthened me to report my credit in 10 days if they do not recieve the payment in full. Please let me know if it worth taking this case to the court? How can I stop it ?...Thanks
